Ukrainian forces have regained full access to high-speed satellite internet connections after a week of significant operational disruptions. Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara announced on Saturday that the military has restored full use of Starlink services for drones and other fast-moving equipment, ending speed limits that hindered front-line activities.
The Defense Ministry’s monitoring systems now show stable connections for objects moving at speeds exceeding 250 mph, according to Khmara. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that checks verified both Starlink and Starshield, the military-grade version of the service, are running at the correct speeds. Zelenskyy noted that the restoration began late last night, providing sufficient speeds by morning, a development he described as very important for the war effort.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the restored service is critical for front-line logistics and for protecting Ukraine from reactive Shahed drones. These Iranian-made aircraft are regularly launched by Russia. Last week’s restrictions on Starshield alarmed Ukrainian military and government officials, with commanders reporting lost drones and disrupted missions during the period of limited connectivity.
The resolution of the satellite issue coincides with new diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. U.S. envoys have launched a fresh push for peace, following Russia’s agreement on Wednesday to resume three-way negotiations with Washington and Kyiv next month. Additionally, Kyiv and Moscow agreed on Friday to a localized ceasefire around Oleshky, a war-ravaged, Russian-occupied town in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. This truce was brokered by First Lady Melania Trump.
The episode added to existing tensions between Kyiv and Washington. Relations were already strained by President Donald Trump’s reported deal with Moscow on Russian diesel imports, a move Ukraine viewed as a betrayal. Khmara credited direct dialogue and Zelenskyy’s diplomacy with Washington for the outcome, stating it mattered most for the front, military operations, drone work, logistics, and communications.
Zelenskyy thanked Americans and all partners who took the situation seriously and provided real help. Questions have lingered since last week over who ordered the interruptions to the satellite internet system built by Elon Musk’s company. Ukraine has relied on this infrastructure for years to counter Russian attacks. Trump has maintained that he did not make the call, while also saying Musk should not be blamed.
The restoration of full speeds marks a return to normalcy for Ukrainian command and control systems. As negotiations resume, the reliability of communication links remains a central focus for military planners. The successful resolution of this technical dispute may serve as a positive signal for upcoming diplomatic talks, highlighting the importance of clear coordination between allies in a modern conflict environment.
