World Cup Record Could Tip Ballon d'Or Balance for Mbappe
A trophyless season has not stopped the striker from making a compelling push for the prize.

Kylian Mbappe has stepped up his campaign for football's top individual award ahead of Monday's ceremony in London, where the winner will be revealed. The forward, who is not currently favored by bookmakers, has actively promoted his own case for the honor.
The Ballon d'Or is not a financial windfall, but winning it significantly enhances a player's standing and market value. For Mbappe, the 2025-26 season presents a specific dilemma. The campaign concluded without a single trophy at either the club or international level, a gap he must bridge with personal statistics.
His primary argument rests on his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. He secured the Golden Boot for the second straight tournament and established a new record for the most goals in World Cup history, tallying 22 goals across 22 matches. This achievement places him above Lionel Messi, who has 21, and former Germany forward Miroslav Klose, with 16.
Mbappe has spoken with confidence regarding his standing in the sport's history. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," he said last month. When asked for his preferred choice for the award, he replied: "Myself."
Club statistics also support his nomination. He finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 strikes. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," the forward stated.
However, a lack of silverware remains the central weakness of his case. Real Madrid endured a difficult season under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, finishing second in the league and exiting the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich. This marks the second consecutive season without a major trophy for the club. France also fell short on the international stage, placing fourth after losing to Spain in the semi-finals and England in the third-place match.
Competitors for the award have stronger resumes regarding team success. Lamine Yamal won both the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, while Harry Kane secured three titles with Bayern, including the Bundesliga. Mbappe's manager, Jose Mourinho, has defended the player's candidacy. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said.
Statistical precedent offers a caution. Over the last decade, every winner has lifted at least one trophy during the award year. Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, contributed to PSG's first Champions League title, and Rodri secured Euro 2024 and the Premier League before winning two years ago. The last recipient to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013, who scored 66 goals for club and country despite Real Madrid finishing as league runners-up.
Despite these obstacles, Mbappe remains a contender. Following nine nominations and a third-place finish in 2023, he continues to pursue the record. The outcome of Monday's ceremony will determine if individual brilliance can outweigh the absence of team honors.
